KCC Scam Updates

25 August 2023
Dear Kent Residents

This week we received reports from Kent Police of courier fraud targeting residents in Ashford, Hythe, Ramsgate and Snodland. The police will never telephone and ask for your bank card and pin to be collected by a courier as part of an investigation. Please continue to warn friends and family so they stay safe.

Kent Police report numerous reports of Courier Fraud across Kent:
– Ashford
– Hythe
– Ramsgate
– Snodland

❌ The residents were called from someone claiming to be from Hammersmith Police and were told that a family member had been arrested for committing fraud on their bank card and to call 999 for further information.

❌ Unknown to the resident, the criminal had not cleared the phone line so the resident thinks that they are speaking to the Police who instructs them that a courier would come to pick up their bank card and pin from their home as part of the investigation.

🚨 This is a scam.

❎ The Police never telephone and ask for your bank card and pin number to be collected by a courier to assist in an investigation.

❎ Always check the dialing tone after your call to ensure scammers are not still on the phone, use another telephone if possible or call a trusted friend first.

🚨 If a courier arrives at your property ring 999.

If you think that you may have been a victim of this or any other type of scam, then contact your bank immediately, which you can do by calling 159 and report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040.

We have had reports of residents receiving scam messages on WhatsApp from recruiters.

Fake email impersonating DVLA sent to Kent residents

⛔ We have received information that Kent residents have received emails claiming to be from the DVLA asking them to fill out a form and provide bank account details.

🚨 This is a scam.

The resident noticed the website address appeared to be wrong and that DVLA do not usually ask for bank account details so they did not open the form.

For advice and to report contact Citizens Advice on consumer helpline 0808 223 1133 or report to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

Online Car Report Scam

⛔ Kent resident recently purchased a ‘car history report’ online. The link provided by the scammers did not work and showed a error page of code. No car history was ever given.

🚨 This is a scam.

When the resident looked on their bank statement they had been charged a different amount to that quoted at the time of purchase.

For advice and to report contact Citizens Advice on consumer helpline 0808 223 1133 or report to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

Action Fraud has received 468 reports in two weeks relating to fake emails claiming to be from Asda.

Watch out for these scam emails claiming you’ve won a free air fryer. The websites the emails link to are designed to steal your contact info and payment details.
